1.1 Why do many layers show no statistics?
Due to the huge numer of layers catalogued with mapmatters.org we would have to send thousands of requests every second to collect meaningful statistics for every layer. That's why we monitor only those layers for which a user has explicitly activated the monitoring. It's free to do this. Simply choose the "keep track now" function, that you can find on the overview page of a layer or service.

1.2 How do I use the "PLUS"-Button that shows up with each WMS layer?
When you click this button the layer will be added to the main map. Go the map page and you will see all previously added layers in the map. At current we have to restrict this functionality to a maximum of three layers. You may remove the layers again with the "MINUS"-buttons.
-
1.3 How can I see the statistics of a layer?
From any page with a list of layers click on the layers title to go go to the detailed overview (e.g. http://www.mapmatters.org/wms/531628). On this page scroll down. Beneath the map there is a placeholder for the statistics. Click on the desired period (day, week...) to load the statistics. After the statistics have loaded you will see a small icon that allows to refresh the graph.

1.4 What happens if I test my service?
If you enter the URL of a service to be tested, mapmatters will parse the GetCapabilities document from the given address. Then a small number of GetMap requests will be sent to each layer found in the service. After the tests you will be presented with a link to the newly generated statistics. Please note: your service will be added to the catalogue of mapmatters.org. However we will not start monitoring your service automatically. You may start monitoring later on if you like.
- 2 Technical Background
-
2.1 Why is the quality of previews and map images worse than in the original service?
We transform maps and previews from the original coordinate reference system to a transverse mercator projection.
Depending on the type of map and the originial coordinate reference system this may cause distortion or other artifacts.
So please always check the original service if you want to judge the image quality.

2.2 How can I remove a service again from mapmatters.org?
mapmatters.org thinks that every publicly available service should be listed here. It's the same philosophy a search engine follows for all kinds of documents. However if you are the administrator of a service, we will respect, if you want to remove it from our catalogue. In this case check the log file of your webserver. You will find entries with mapmatters.org as user agent. The entries contain the URL of a special page that enables you to remove your service.
